I can't count the number of times i encounter random empty folders laying around months after removing the program they were created by because the devs of said programs are too lazy to make a proper uninstaller. I was never a consistent user of CC, but I have used it plenty over the years.

Why keep executables that you already used and don't need any more? Do the same with your Documents folder; delete things that you know you won't need. You can now delete your browsing history and clear cookies, if you want. This won't give a whole lot of space and is entirely up to you.
It may speed up the browser somewhat. Just be aware that you'll have to re-enter passwords. All of this can be done in 5 minutes time, if that. You've pretty much done what CCleaner does, without having to have a program for it.
I, personally would rather do those things myself. I'm not too trusting of these utilities. Plus, Windows already has a tool that does what CCleaner does: I'll trust the Windows tool over any third party application any day.
Problems are from people just checking everything off then cleaning, And running the registry part without a backup. If you use it it's best to do it in small sections. If there is a bug report it to piriform.

No on some machines windows needs to be reinstalled to get search working again, it isn't a super rare issue. There are more issues than just the registry cleaner, it also causes bluescreens on some machines even when not using the reg cleaner.

Yea it's really a holdover from old tech - like screensavers to stop CRT images being burned in. No one can tell me that my 8 gigs of ram and 2 terabytes of storage need more "cleaning" than the default windows 10 defrag. I swear by ccleaner, I use it at work on a USB stick.
Admittedly they are all W7 PCs and so the reg cleaner doesn't do any damage. But I used it on a PC that was used by a bunch of people, was suffering from failed updates etc. Did all the windows updates, did a reboot and then ran it.
The default config is kind of terrible deletes nearly all saved browsers state for example and the GUI uses weird patterns for partial deletion. I would not install this tool for somebody not knowledgeable in computers.

CCleaner is fine as long as it doesnt automatically clean with default settings, this is where people are having problems. Windows keeps them for as long as they are needed. CCleaner removes them prematurely, which can cause problems.
I've only had positive experiences with it. I've used it since XP and am on W10 right now and use it daily. CCleaner cleans up your tracks. My guess is there is increased interest in CCleaner as of late. I don't think Microsoft wants people associating Windows with the need for a privacy utility.
Personally I think the issue is telemetry. Having a tool that gets between Microsoft and your personal information seems to be frowned upon. But I also think it's interesting how CCleaner is being branded as a registry cleaner when that is likely one of its least used features.

It just removes data. In other words, nothing is protected, the tool already deleted it. It doesn't really speed up the PC. It makes the speed go back to normal. Upgrade, tweak, or overclock to really speed up your PC.

Microsoft fucked up Windows 10's search. It doesn't work as good as the one in Windows 7. CCleaner tends to make it even worse by cleaning the indexed locations. GU removes only files and registry bits related to the program being uninstalled. Though, I also don't have a use for most of the things in CCleaner other than it's temp file removal. If so, I will start using one of them instead.

The registry really is very confusing for what it really is, which is just a bunch of text. There's really no way for it to affect performance, and like you say, it's going to use very little storage space.
Don't clean your registry unless you know what you're doing! That's not a task that will improve your PC performance at all! Issues that aren't actually issues. Removing entries in the registry can only cause problems for the future when Windows or some other software require something from it that those dumb programs ended up removing.
The update files for an up-to-date windows 10 install should take up less than 10GB more for 7, but not, sounds like something is wrong with your install, and deleting temp files is unlikely to solve the actual problem.
My boot drive is 60 and it's fine You have to clean that stuff out every once in a while, but you ought to do that anyways. Except Windows will automatically clear those old restore points and such when space is limited.
It CAN use up a lot of space, but doesn't need to. Neither have any issues. His ssd and hard drive both had 3 partitions and only the C partition had any data on it, and he didn't know how to clean it nor did he know what a partition was.

That totally unskilled user should categorically not use a tool like CCleaner. The only difference between CCleaner and Windows Disk Cleanup is that CCleaner will also "clean" your registry something nontypical user ever needs to do, and that CAN certainly cause harm ; windows disk cleanup will remove all the same temp files.
With that said, I've never seen a store bought laptop with more than two "user facing drives" one drive with two partitions, or two drives - I've definitely never seen a laptop with 2 drives hosting 6 partitions, that's just madness and dumb.
Windows already has all the tools this user needs. He certainly got a messed up initial PC configuration, but that's not really relevant. Fortunately, he's just running zounds of chrome tabs so while he's got tons of unused hard drive space he doesn't know how to use, he doesn't really need any anyways.

You don't have to open every program and do it yourself. That's the main reason I use it every once in a while. I barely have used Windows 10 planning to come back to PC in the coming months. Yes and Windows 10 typically handles its own maintenance tasks on its own.
You really don't need to do it at all. The only thing that might take up unnecessary space would be restore points, and you can just disable that feature if you don't want them. Software like CCleaner are very useful because they contain a suite of functions in one easy location.

Just open the command prompt and enter these lines of code CCleaner clears caches for all internet browsers, and everyday Windows cache stuff as needed, helps you manage startup programs, and gives your registry a once-over to make sure everything is in good shape.
It also wipes your free space and will uninstall programs, etc. All with one click of a button. That's a bit disingenuous. You don't need to resort to the command line for basic system maintenance, we're talking about Windows not Ubuntu.
All the maintenance you need to do in Windows is GUI based, and you don't even need to know exactly what apps to run since you can search for terms in Start. You could save those lines into a text file and call it cleanup.
Bonus, you learn something about how your pc works. Yeah but CCleaner provides backups in case things go wrong for the cache and registry cleaning, and there's still several features not covered by that text file that would require extra steps.

With CCleaner you can tell all your friends and family about how clean you butthole computer is and then they can tell all their friends about their grandson the computer expert.
In windows 10 and I think 7 too this can be done anyway without a third party program. Not really worth it. So I did have ccleaner installed about 2 weeks ago and it was the same version 5. I however uninstalled it before this even was news.
Should I be worried? First, AVG is trash, I mean, really trash, a ridiculous bloatware. You better served with Windows Defender from Windows 10 than this trash. If you want to pay for AV go for Bitdefender, Kaspersky etc.
You might as well look here: Second, just because it hit mainstream media now, it doesn't mean this has not been happening for some months. Third, no one can guarantee that removing CCleaner will 'fix' everything, the analysis is still going on, the hole might be deeper.
At first they thought it was a 'normal' hacking, later they saw traces of code related to APT Advanced Persistent Threat groups, so the analysis is still going on. Well after looking around I stumbled on this article: It states that if you have a registry value under piriform that you would be affected.
Do you know if this mean anything? If you have the means, reinstall Windows. The answer to your question will always be Piriform 'believes' later versions are safe. But are they really? The company is still clueless about what happened, so any assurance it gives will have zero worth.
IMO it's not worth using this software anymore for any reason. If they got compromised this badly over such a long period, they clearly have serious problems managing their own infrastructure.
I'm now worried that the breach couldve extended to Avast itself and we're blindly trusting a potentially compromised AV firm. Okayyy, is it safe to use Speccy then? It's from Piriform as well..
Their other apps havent been vetted but IMO none can be trusted now. I've always used Glary Utilities for maintenance. There is a free version or you can go here if you want the pro version for free.
Just watch what you are agreeing to during install. Yes, it's a helpful solution, CCleaner is just junk so you don't have to worry if it's safe. Holy shit problem solved! Obviously it's better to manually open up all your programs with a cache and clear them individually, and when your hard drive does eventually get full, you just toss it out and buy a new one.
Are you truly so dense that you think telling someone to ignore their problem is an acceptable way to answer a question? People using CCleaner are pc illitterates that believe ads telling them they need it to keep their pc fast.
Telling them there is no need is the actual solution to the problem. Well then I guess we finally found the guy responsible for deciding what constitutes a real problem. I used CCleaner before, but after the hack I switched to Privazer.
I'm not sure if the program is all that great, but it seems to do what it advertises, and it's got great reviews and is one of the alternatives to CCleaner. Also, I'm pretty sure CCleaner was bought by Avast, and I'm really not interested in their meddling with a great, free software.
If you still have doubt, use other cleaner softwares. Do you have a sugestion about how to proceed? Any kind if check up?

No offering rewards to solicit help. Software like CCleaner are very useful because they contain a suite of functions in one easy location. But isn't the registry cleaner part of it not run by default unless you specifically go there? I really wish that when I searched for something it would search on the computer and not on the internet. CCleaner removes them prematurely, which can cause problems. And it appears that's what people use it for. That would be the best way and I am gonna use the windows apps now.
